Dental veneers are wafer-thin shells of tooth-colored materials, which are used for covering the front surface of teeth for cosmetic purposes and are also known as porcelain veneers. Veneers are used to change the color, length, shape or size of teeth and are bonded to the front surface of teeth.

The terminology “dental veneers” refers to a thin ceramic shell or layer that is placed over the surface of a tooth. They are made from restorative materials that are used for aesthetic purposes as well as protecting the surface area of a damaged tooth. They are basically used to help an individual have better looking teeth and a nicer smile, hence the fact that they are used by many cosmetic dentists. Additionally, the process of applying dental veneers is not as complex as the process of getting crowns but more complex than bonding.

Veneers are most commonly used to restore damaged, discolored, fractured, or gaped teeth. The material is usually about a millimeter in thickness and is typically placed on the surface of a tooth that is still healthy and intact. Unlike the application of a crown, a tooth does not have to be filed down or shaped in any way to apply dental veneers. They can be used to lengthen teeth or widen them while being available in about 25 different shades. As they are a protective layer, veneers can reduce the sensitivity to cold, heat, and sweets.

There are basically 4 different types of dental veneers that are being used by cosmetic dentists today. These include:

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers – these can usually be fitted in only one trip to the dentist. They have been polished and are smoothed in order to look like normal teeth but are not as strong as porcelain veneers. These are prone to fracturing when eating crunchy or hard foods but they can be easily repaired.

Palatal Veneers

Palatal veneers – these are dental veneers that are usually constructed out of gold, but they can also be manufactured out of composite materials or porcelain. These veneers are used on the palate side (inside) of a person’s upper teeth specifically for the management and treatment of tooth wear.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers – thin ceramic shells that get bonded on the front side of one’s teeth. Dental veneers have no metal in the material they are made from unlike the typical dental crown. It usually takes to visits to the dentist to have porcelain dental veneers completed. The dentist will take an impression of your teeth and apply a temporary veneer made from plastic on your first visit. The temporary veneers are removed and replaced with your permanent veneers on the second visit.

Non-permanent Veneers

Non-permanent veneers – made from a flexible type of resin material, non-permanent veneers are available and can be easily removed as needed. There are even kits available for making your own non-permanent veneers at home.

In most cases, a portion of the tooth’s enamel is removed prior to applying dental veneers. However, the tooth is not usually filed down or reshaped like it is done with crowns. As a result, you may experience some temporary sensitivities to cold or hot beverages and food. Additionally, certain individuals are not the best candidates for receiving dental veneers due to overall poor dental health.

How Dental Veneers Are Applied

Dental veneers allow a dentist to completely resurface a tooth to repair chips, color and shape. These dental veneers will mimic the original tooth perfectly and provide a durable repair for many problems that might have required more aggressive methods in years past. Dental veneers are made from a thin layer of porcelain or composite material and applied to the front of a patient’s teeth. This procedure can be used to adjust the color, shape, length and position of the tooth by adhering this veneer to the original tooth with a specialized dental cement.

Most dental veneers are used to enhance a person’s smile by correcting for defects in their front set of teeth. By creating and applying these veneers to the original teeth, the cosmetic dentist can create a new smile for the patient by using their original teeth for support. The veneers can be applied in a regular office visit.

Before starting the dental veneer procedure, a dentist will typically give the patient a complete dental checkup. This allows them to assess the quality of the patient’s teeth and determine if they can benefit from the application of dental veneers. Once the patient is deemed a good candidate, the dentist will normally take a mold of the patient’s teeth to use as a model for the construction of the veneers themselves. Because these veneers are made for a specific tooth in a particular patient’s mouth, they are highly customized to perfectly mimic the original tooth. This model will allow the dentist to shape the veneer as needed before it can be applied to the patient’s tooth. This not only saves time during a regular office visit for the patient, it also ensures a perfect fit for the final product.

While the majority of these veneers are made from porcelain, other materials are also used depending on the location of the tooth being repaired and the preference of the dentist. The color of the finished veneer is also critical and the dentist will determine this by examining the surrounding teeth to find the perfect color match. In most cases, the veneer itself is made at a separate laboratory that specializes in creating these items and then is delivered to the dentist for application. This process can take a few weeks between the initial visit and the placement of the veneers on the patient’s teeth.

Once the patient has decided to go ahead with treatment, the dentist must remove a small amount of the enamel on the tooth to provide a rough surface to attach the veneer. This rougher surface enables the dental adhesive to bond more fully to the veneer and the patient’s teeth and will ensure years of trouble-free service from the veneers once they have been placed. To apply the veneer, the cosmetic dentist uses a small amount of dental adhesive that is cured with a specialized ultraviolet light. Once this adhesive has cured, the dentist will make other minor adjustments to the size of the veneer to help it blend in with other teeth in the patient’s mouth. The entire procedure may take two visits to complete but will help you to restore the perfect smile you desire.

Application of Dental Veneers

Are you considering dental veneers? Dental veneers are for those that have discolored, fractured teeth or if you have teeth that are not very straight. This is a procedure that is becoming more common in dental offices because everyone wants a great smile.

Dental veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure and thus, they are not covered completely by many dental insurance companies. In most cases, cosmetic dentistry, if not a medical requirement, is a procedure that you will need to pay for completely on your own.

A composite or porcelain veneer is made wafer thin and is bonded to your tooth with a special resin. There are normally two types of material that can be used in order to create the veneers. Porcelain is one of the most common materials used to make dental veneers today and has always been the material used in the past.

The other material that can be used is composite. Most of the time, these are crafted right in the dental clinic and the whole procedure of crafting and application can be done in a few hours.

It is a great way to change a smile that shows yellowed, stained teeth into one that makes you look fantastic. Though most people may not consider veneers for getting perfect set of teeth, they work well, when the gaps need to be filled. Additionally, this procedure can be used to help people look better and feel better about their own selves. Although this procedure may be expensive it is worth it as the instant your procedure is complete, you walk out of the dental office with a brand new smile.

Not every dentist offers this procedure, so you may want to check with your current dentist first to see if they offer dental veneers. If your dentist does not offer application of dental veneer, they maybe able to recommend another dentist that offer it. Your dentist will first determine if you are a good candidate for dental veneers or something else might suit your problem. Veneers are crafted out of porcelain and composite after matching the color of your teeth. This ensures that the artificial tooth does not stand out as too white or yellow. A soft wax impression is taken and using that the technician makes a porcelain veneer. The process of application of the porcelain veneer is longer as it requires laboratory manufacture. But if you are looking for same day veneers, then composite ones are the key. Just walk in and walk out with a new smile.

Veneers are not for everyone, and if your teeth are not strong enough you will not be recommended to have the dental veneers applied. This procedure requires a small amount of the enamel to be drilled off in order to apply the adhesive to hold the veneer in place. If your teeth are weak or are showing signs of the deteriorating enamel, then you may not be able to have dental veneers added to your teeth for a better smile. You may need to explore other options to bring back a white smile.
